LIFE AT IITD
This article hopes to clear some misconceptions about IITD. To the non-IITian, IITD is about studies, studies and more studies, nerds, nerds and more nerds. This is based on the direct projection of life during JEE preparation to life in IITD. In IIT, you will study barely one third of the time you spent studying for JEE. IITD has a great hostel life and there is much more to do other than books(except for a few maggus).
There are cultural clubs such as Dance and Dramatics (more popularly known as DanDi), English Debating and Literary Club, Quizzing Club, and many more, encompassing almost any interest that a person may have. There is BSP (Board for Student Publication) that releases a monthly magazine to which students contribute and which serves as a good outlet for creativity. There is so much in life at IIT Delhi.
BRCA (Board for Recreational and Cultural Activities) events like Street play, GD (Group Dance), Rock Night, Duo Dance etc with cheering and anti-cheering slogans for each hostel, GPLs on each birthday are some of the events that you will experience in your eventful Hostel Life. Fun days such as STIC-D, BHM night are eagerly awaited by students every semester. The main Fests here are:
Fests
Speranza- This is the first Fest you would experience in your IITD
life. It goes on for three days, during which there are events such as
Jeopardy (similar to MTV Roadies), Treasure Hunt over the whole campus,
and many fun events at SAC. Speranza is your first real taste of the
celebration that is IIT Delhi life.
Literati- This event coincides with Speranza, and includes many
literary events, such as Word Games, Complete-the-story, poem
composition, and many more, and is a great experience for students with
literary tastes
Rendezvous- This fest is the summit of celebration at IITD. It involves
a host of cultural events, such as Street Play, Dance, Quizzing events
and many many more. This is the time for pure wild enjoyment.
Tryst- The annual technical fest of IITD. This fest involves you in
events that are related to the ultimate objective (even though he
doesn’t know of it) of the IITian-technology and engineering. Involving
aptitude with exactly the right attitude, this event in which ideas
flow in a whirlwind around IITD is just perfect for the technology
freaks. Events at TRYST include Exhibitions, stunning workshops, guest
lectures and a plethora of competitions.
Opportunities for Cultural Activities and Sports
“I personally, had never done anything other than Software programming
and Studies. But here I took part in street play, treasure hunt, Group
dance, jeopardy, independence day marathon, republic day parade, word
games, a non comp HS event Shabd vyooh. Moreover I also play volleyball
and tennis under NSO. And all this is possible without a single proxy
in lecs. Its not that I have shown some studdapa, the life at IIT is
like this! Every (oops, not every.. well almost :P) arbit interest or
hobby you posses has an event where you can show your enthu. Eventhough
my batti dept is considered to be fighter, we do have chill profs and
chill courses. Fundae from seniors makes life easier. The zooks and
fukkae in tests become a part of life and also teach how to maintain
your cool at tough times.”
(That is IIT lingo for you, hard to find a
Rosetta stone to decipher that if you are non-IITian)
Sports infrastructure at IIT Delhi is great. Just to give an idea
"I had to cycle 3km on a busy main road everyday to play basketball
when in school but now the hostel basketball court is right in front of
my room" says a friend of ours. The institute provides good infra and
facilities for sports and other recreational activities. There is NSO,
for which you have to complete 100 hours of Sports activities in your
four years. There are events such as Inter-Hostel tournaments,
Inter-IIT Sports Meet and Sportech that are incredibly popular. Again
in terms of my friend: “Most of us come into IIT having spent the
greater part of our life so far under books. IIT culture does a great
job of encouraging beginners to play, and there are many instances when
people who have not played a particular sport their whole life getting
so good in it here as to make it to the Inter-IIT.
There is so much to life in IIT Delhi. Sports, Stage Play, Dance,
Literary events, Fests, and so much more makes life enriching here. Are
we forgetting something? Oh yeah, there is a bit of studies as well,
but I strongly recommend you not to interrupt your celebrations for it
:)
